D. Shapes
After earlier work with the figure, Florsheim moved to make abstracted curved forms. Her earlier work was of a single shape, such as "Leaf" (D1); followed by explorations into more complex shapes, as in "Ribbon" (D3), disciplining the form with both geometry and an emerging intentionality.
Later work was particularly accomplished. "Construction" (D8) in particular featured a continuous plane to create both a rich external reading and complex interiors. This piece has strong emotive qualities, quite visible when seen from different vantage points. As such, it is a significant addition to similar works by Max Bill and Georges Vantongerloo, both of whom she knew personally. Like Bill, she varied the thickness of the continuous surface in her work, often for structural reasons, although the transitions were well disguised.
These complex shapes were made by layering Plaster of Paris sheets or wax on a wire armature. Some were cast in bronze or plastic. Information on these works is very limited; dating is approximate. Some are known only from a single photograph. Only a few survive (D1, D6, and D8).
